Large group who travelled 50km to camp at Kilkenny beauty spot are sent packing
Kilkenny gardai had to send a group who had travelled more than 50 kilometres to camp out at a local beauty spot packing this weekend.
Gardai in Mullinavat had to instruct the large group consisting of different families who had set up camp at the picturesque Poulanassy Waterfall to go home after it turned out home happened to be more than 50km away.
Local gardai said the group, who had camping gear in tow and set-up for a mini-jamboree, told officers they believed the travel restrictions had been lifted as they read it on “an online social media page”.
Gardaí engaged with the group and patiently explained the Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines to them. They were told by the gardai their understanding of the travel rules were incorrect and they “should only obtain their information from a reputable source such as the HSE or Government websites”.
The gardai advised the group to return home, which they complied with.
This was one of just many incidents around Poulanassy over the weekend.
A local garda source said: “Your local gardaí in Kilkenny/Carlow continue to support Government Public Health Guidelines during Phase 1 which takes effect today, Monday 18th May. We will continue to engage, educate and encourage. Please remember to #StayHome except for essential journeys, exercise within 5km of your residence.
“This phase is critical for our country, there has been a high compliance to date and this has contributed to the country moving to this new phase and we want to thank the public for that compliance but compliance with the update guidelines must be maintained.”
