LATEST: Kilkenny among 456 new cases of virus, Government to ban sale of takeaway pints
A further five more people have died after contracting the coronvairus as 456 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 1,984. There are now 68,356 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 105 are in Dublin, 85 in Limerick, 43 in Cork, 38 in Meath, 25 in Clare with the remaining 160 cases are spread across 21 other counties, including nine further infections in Kilkenny.
The latest cases were confirmed as it was reported that the Government is considering a clampdown on pubs selling takeaway drinks.
According to reports, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly (pictured) will sign a health regulation over the coming days which will prohibit the sale of takeaway alcohol from pubs and restaurants.
The development comes amid public after footage emerged on social media of large numbers of people in Dublin city centre drinking on the streets over the weekend.
Legislative changes to stop the sale of takeaway alcohol would require new regulations to be drafted by the Department of Health. However, an agreement on the regulations would have to be reached at Cabinet beforehand.
