LATEST: Nine new cases of virus in Kilkenny as another death and 470 infections confirmed
One further person has died after contracting the coronavirus as 470 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 1,801. There are now 37,063 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 198 cases are in Dublin, 61 in Cork, 36 in Donegal, 19 in Kildare, 19 in Limerick, 12 in Kerry, 11 in Galway, 11 in Meath, 10 in Roscommon, 9 in Cavan, 9 in Clare, 9 in Kilkenny, 9 in Longford, 9 in Offaly, 9 in Westmeath, 8 in Louth, 7 in Tipperary, 7 in Wexford, with the remaining 17 cases in 7 counties.
The latest cases in the Republic were confirmed as a massive surge in infections were recorded over the border.
Northern Ireland confirmdd 934 positive tests over the past 24 hours – a new daily record and more than double the previous record of 424 new cases set earlier this week. The latest swabs involved 6,038 individuals, with roughly one in six testing positive.
The 24-hour increase in Northern Ireland is just two shy of the highest daily figure reported in the Republic (936) during the height of the pandemic on April 23.
