LATEST: No further deaths but 45 new cases, Government to call time on reopening of pubs
There has been no further coronavirus-related deaths but 45 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It means the overall death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,763. There are now 26,253 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland, according to the latest daily briefing from the Naitonal Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
No further infections have been recorded in Kilkenny, where the number of cases remains at 357.
The latest cases were confirmed as Tánaiste Leo Varadkar signalled that the planned reopening of pubs under Phase 4 of the easing of restrictions would not proceed as planned.
Speaking ahead of today’s Cabinet meeting, Mr Varadkar said NPHET has advised the Government to take a “cautious approach”.
“I know what will come as a further blow to some of the sectors that can’t be reopened. But we just can’t risk moving backward or risk schools reopening,” the Tánaiste added.
