Man killed and two rushed to Kilkenny hospital after motorway carnage

A man was killed and two other rushed to hospital in Kilkenny following a horrific three-car motorway collision.

The crash occurred on between Junction 4 and Junction 5 southbound on the M9 shortly after 7am this morning.

The driver of one of the cars, a man in his 80s, was taken to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny in a serious condition, but he later died from his injuries.

Another man in his 30s was taken to hospital where his condition is currently described as serious.

The third person, a woman in her 30s was also taken to St Luke’s but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The stretch of road in county Kildare was temporarily closed to allow Garda forensics to carrying out a technical examination.

Gardaí this evening appealed for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: “They are particularly appealing to any road users who were travelling on this road at the time with camera footage to make this available to them.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527 730, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
