Progress in plans to build 12 new apartments in centre of county Kilkenny town

The construction of 12 new apartments in the centre of a county Kilkenny town is one step closer to becoming a reality after developers submitted revised plans to the local authority.

In July of this year, Kilkenny County Council granted planning permission for developers James Ryan and Shane Lynch to go ahead with their plans to renovate and convert a cottage and create 12 apartments on a site at Mill Street in Callan, subject to 12 planning conditions. These conditions included submitting new plans for aspects of the design of the site.

Parts of the site in Callan are listed on National Inventory of Architectural Heritage and on the Record of Protected Structures for Kilkenny and permission was granted with respect to these.

The new application submitted by Ryan and Lynch has addressed the conditions of the Chief Executive of Planning in Kilkenny’s orders. In the new application, a request to demolish a building within the site has been removed, as has the request to carry out work on a building within the Architectural Conservation Area (ACA), which addresses much of the Chief Executive’s conditions.

If the new application is accepted the development at the site of an existing cottage will consist of  12 apartments, two within the cottage and 10 newly built two-bedroom apartments over a two-storey block.
