Objection puts brakes on plans for new hotel in Kilkenny city-centre
Plans to build a new boutique hotel in the centre of Kilkenny city are on hold after an appeal was lodged against the local authority’s decision to approve the development.
Last Month Kilkenny County Council granted developer Kevin Moore Building Ltd permission to create a 23-bedroom hotel located between Lower John’s Street and Horse Barrack Lane.
The plan would have involved the demolition of the existing first and second floors of 19 and 20 John’s Street. Further demolition works were planned for extensions to the rear, an outbuilding and old garage to make way for a new two-storey extension.
The developer planned top create a new three-storey hotel pavilion along Horse Barrack Lane with internal courtyards and a rooftop garden.
However, an appeal to the council’s decision to grant permission for the hotel development has been lodged to An Bord Pleanála, which has at least delayed the planned works.
The national planning authority is expected to rule on whether the hotel can proceed in July.
The site for the hotel is located in the John Street Architectural Conservation Area, at the location most recently used as Lewis’s shop.
