Zero burglaries reported in two Kilkenny areas for whole of last year

Two Garda stations in county Kilkenny reported zero burglaries in 2020, a new report reveals.

The survey by Phonewatch confirms burglaries in across the city and county plummeted by more than a third last.

Data supplied to Phonewatch by the Central Statistics Office Recorded Crime Index for 2020 shows burglaries in Kilkenny fell from 314 in 2019 to 233 in 2020, a drop of 81 (34.37%).

Each local station also reported a big drop in burglaries. Two staions in Kilmacow and Stoneyford reported no burglaries for the whole of 2020.

Kilkenny Garda Station recorded the most highest burglaries and lowest percentage fall, with 73 reported break-ins last year, down from 83 in 2019, a 13.3% drop.

Nationally, the CSO’s recorded10,938 burglaries and related offences in 2020, representing a 35% decrease on the previous year.

Phonewatch estimates a reported burglary takes place every 48 minutes in Ireland.
