Sequel in battle over Kilkenny cinema car park

The developers of a proposed new car park in Kilkenny city that was recently shot down by the local council have appealed their case to the national planning authority.

Last month Kilkenny County Council refused permission for City Cinemas Limited to develop a temporary car park with 62 spaces at its site on Barrack Street.

City Cinemas made the request looking for permission to provide the temporary car park for a period of five years. It also sought to make “minor alterations” to the existing vehicle entrance to their site off Barrack Street near the IMC cinema.

This local authority turned down the application, but now City Cinemas have appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanála.

Earlier this year, the local authority approved the cinema’s plans to increase its amount of screens, while at the same time reducing the overall amount of seats.

An Bord Pleanála is expected to rule on the car park application by the end of the year.
