Seven horses recovered from land on the outskirts of Kilkenny city may have to be put down if their owners do not come forward within the next week.

That’s the message from Kilkenny County Council after it was forced to rescue seven horses that were loose on the outskirts of Kilkenny city over the weekend

The horses, six female and one male, were recovered from the Salt Yards, Hebron Road, Kilkenny on Wednesday.

Upon inspection, it was discovered that six of the horses were microchipped, but only three with Kilkenny County Council. Two of the horses are 15 years old, while two others are 12, one is 10 and there are two two-year olds.

A council spokesperson said: “Should these animals remain unclaimed after close of business on Wednesday, March 25, they will be sold, rehomed, or be disposed of.”
