The gift of home: Christmas comes early for 15 local families
CHIRSTMAS will come early for 15 families under a new 20-year lease scheme agreed by Kilkenny County Council.
The families are set to move into unoccupied properties in Callan within the next fortnight, giving them plenty of time to settle in ahead of the festive season.
Meanwhile, Junior Minister and local TD John Paul Phelan has confirmed that €555,818 will be made available to develop four local authority homes in Thomastown. News of the welcome investment for Thomastown will be confirmed to local councillors tomorrow.
The properties in Callan, which stretch from number 1 to number 15 Bolton Woods, Green Lane, include nine three-bed homes, four four-bed houses and two five-bed properties.
Minister Phelan said this evening: “The houses are currently unoccupied. They were to be taken over by a housing cooperative but are now ready to become home for 15 families on the housing waiting list. This is a fantastic early Christmas boost for all the families involved and I wish them the very best in their new homes and new communities. Callan boasts a huge array of sporting, social and cultural facilities and is a welcoming, close-knit community.”
It is anticipated work will begin immediately on the four local authority houses in Cloghabrody, Thomastown.
Minister Phelan said a decision was “taken centrally to announce it on its own” rather than part of a group of housing projects in order to “speed up delivery of the investment”.
He added: “This is a good news story for families in need in the region and I will be doing everything I can to see these homes delivered as soon as possible.”
