UPDATE: Young motorcyclist killed in collision with lorry on county Kilkenny road

A MOTORCYCLIST died after his bike was involved in a collision with a lorry near Castlecomer.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, died after the collision, which occurred at around 11am around two kilometres outside of Castlecomer on the Kilkenny city side.

The young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to St Luke’s General Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place.

The Garda Press Office said in a statement this evening: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N78 at Clashduff, Co. Kilkenny at about 11am this morning.

“A male motorcyclist, believed to be in his 20s, was fatally injured when he was involved in a collision with a truck. ”

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash as gardai closed off the road for forensic examination.

The road was closed and temporary diversions were put in place.

Kilkenny gardai said on social media earlier: “Road Closure due to serious road traffic collision on N78 at Ballycomey, Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny. Traffic travelling from Athy to Castlecomer divert via Ballyragget. Local diversion for traffic coming from Kilkenny. Expect delays.”

The tragic incident follows the serious crash in Cuffesgrange, approximately four kilometres outside Kilkenny city, involving a car and a tractor with a trailer on Tuesday night.

One woman who was seriously injured in the collision remains in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
