Dreaming of a green Christmas: Festival to transform city through art and recyling

By COLIN BARTLEY
SAY it quietly – Chrismas is coming. And this year a Kilkenny festival is trying to turn the festive season green, rather than red.
Yulefest Kilkenny is asking the public to think about sustainability in the run-up to Christmas and aims to brighten up the city with festive shopfront transformations, all made out of recycled materials.
Together with social enterprise body ReCreate Ireland and Oscar-nominated Kilkenny based animation company Cartoon Saloon, the trio will host 25 workshops during October to discuss sustainability and reuse, then create items that will be used to transform the city centre as part of Yulefest Kilkenny.
The items, from baubles to figures – created from recycled materials, will come together on window displays that create motifs that tell a sustainability story through characters the Cartoon Saloon have created.
Primary schools, community groups, businesses and the general public all across Kilkenny will be given the opportunity to work on the project.
All details can be found on their website: www.yulefestkilkenny.ie.
