Gardai hunt arsonist who broke into WIT overnight and started fire in college

Gardai were called to the scene of a fire at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), where one-in-four of all Kilkenny students attend, overnight.

The blaze is believed to have been started deliberately and gardai have captured CCTV footage of a suspect leaving the rear of the college.

Local gardai confirmed they were notified of the blaze just after 3am. When officers arrived at the scene members of the Fire Service were already in the process of extinguishing a fire inside the college.

A local Garda spokesperson confirmed: “A window had been broken on the building. Fire was started maliciously.

“CCTV was viewed and a suspect was observed in the area at 02.36am. The suspect is seen exiting onto Paddy Browne’s road via the rear of WIT  and then turning left.”

The scene of the fire was preserved for a technical examination. Gardai said the only damage was a broken window and “smoke damage”.

Gardai have urged anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area at the time, or motorists who may have dashcam footage, to contact Waterford Garda Station.
