Pride of Place: country’s top community groups flock to Kilkenny for awards
Hundreds of unsung heroes from across the island of Ireland will descend on Kilkenny today for the 2019 Pride of Place awards.
The Pride of Place awards is an annual competition organised by Co-operation Ireland and sponsored by IPB Insurance, which promotes and celebrates the best in community development. The awards recognise the selfless efforts of people in making their local neighbourhoods better places to live, work and socialise.
It is an All-Island competition whereby local authorities nominate groups in their communities, who they feel have made a significant contribution to improving their areas.
There are 18 awards up for grabs tonight, 12 for groups in rural areas and six for urban areas.
Four Kilkenny community groups have been put forward by Kilkenny County Council in the hope of winning an award. They are:
|Community Tourism||Graiguenamanagh Festivals Committee|
|Population 0-300||Ballyhale Development Association|
|Population 300-1000||Inistioge Community Centre “Cois Abhann”|
This year marks the 17th anniversary of the awards, which are being hosted by Kilkenny County Council at the Lyrath Estate and Hotel this evening.
Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Peter Cleere said: “Kilkenny has a strong history of communities coming together to accomplish major achievements and Kilkenny County Council are delighted to be partners with Cooperation Ireland and Irish Public Bodies Insurances in hosting this prestigious event.
“To all community groups all over the country in every city, town, village and parish, you are to be commended for continuing to work together to increase people’s pride in where they live and in turn help to build vibrant communities.”
