Kilkenny TD urges support for new law to ban rent hikes

A local TD is calling for support for a new Bill to prohibit rent increases for all existing and new tenancies for three years.

Deputy Kathleen Funchion said the Bill, if passed, would give many tenantssome much needed security in the midst of a severe housing and rental crisis.

The Carlow-Kilkenny TD said: “The Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2021, if implemented, will ensure that rents in existing tenancies across Kilkenny will be capped at their rate on the date the new legislation is enacted.

“New tenancies will be set according to the Residential Tenancies Board rent index. Renters in Kilkenny are significantly impacted by rises in their monthly rental, this is why it’s so important that all TDs pass this important bill.”

Deputy Funchion (pictured below) said the ban on rent increases would run for three years, “with an annual review built into the legislation”.

She added: “This bill is one of the many solutions Sinn Féin has put forward to tackle the rental crisis. This includes a refundable tax credit which would give renters one month’s rent back.”
