LATEST: Kilkenny among 1,066 new cases of virus as three further deaths confirmed
A further three people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 1,066 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 1,871 . There are now 54,476 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, acording to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 244 are in Dublin, 104 in Galway, 98 in Cork, 92 in Meath, with the remaining 528 cases are spread across all remaining counties.
The latest cases were confirmed as reports earlier revealed that 25 out of 27 residents, along with a significant number of staff members, at the Nightingale nursing home in Ahascragh in county Galway tested positive for the virus.
One resident at the home has died. Two others were admitted to hospital after their conditions deteriorated.
RTÉ reported that problem began to emerge last Monday after a resident was taken to hospital. A positive test was returned for that person and all staff and residents in the home were subsequently swabbed.
By the time the results of the tests came back on Tuesday night it was discovered 25 out of 27 residents were found to be Covid-19 positive. It understood 10 care staff and seven nurses have also been infected.
All have gone into isolation to reduce the further spread of the virus.
