‘No respect’ – anger as large crowds leave litter strewn across Kilkenny’s Castle Park

Concerns have been raised about large crowds of peope gathering in Kilkenny’s Castle Park and leaving litter strewn all over the hugely popular local amenity.

Plastic and glass drinks bottles were left strewn across the park by thoughtless litterers over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

There were also reports of littering at other beauty spots across the county and of people dumping rubbish at overflowing bring banks.

The leader of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Andrew McGuinness, hit out at litterbugs who he said have “no respect” for our beautiful local amenities.

Cllr McGuinness said: “The Castle Park is a great amenity. We are lucky to have such a gem in the heart of the city. It’s a shame to see a small minority of people with little or no respect for it.”

Many people took to social media to express their anger and disgust at those responsible.

One woman said: “It’s such a beautiful park, wish we had one like it in thurles, people don’t realise how lucky to have it within their 5km, shame on those who leave litter behind like this.”

Another person wrote: “Well with the crowds around Kilkenny ya would never know there was a pandemic happening and not to many masks being worn . l’ll be shocked if Kilkenny numbers are not sky high in the nxt [sic] few weeks.”
