ELECTIONS 2019: ‘I’m overwhelmed’ – poll topper Andrew McGuinness pays tribute to family and supporters
ANDREW McGuinness has paid a heartfelt tribute to his family and election team in the wake of his poll topping exploits in Kilkenny City.
The former mayor put in a hugely impressive performance in the election, securing 1,860 first preference votes, and his transfers should be enough to carry John Coonan over the line in the later counts.
His constituency and party colleague Joe Malone was also elected on the first count in the city with 1,236 first preference votes, capping a highly impressive performance from the John McGuinness election machine.
A delighted Cllr McGuinness today said he is “overwhelmed” with the support he received.
He paid tribute to his campaign team and family, adding: “My canvassing team, some of whom have now canvassed for three generations of my family, went above and beyond to help me get elected. I will never forget what they have done for me and could not have done it without them.
“I want to give a special mention to my Director Of Elections Joe Reidy – a great friend and motivator who has helped me since my very first day as an elected representative.
“My brothers and sister have always been there for me at election time and my mother is my number one canvasser and supporter – she’d beat us all if she ever ran for election herself”.
“To Carol, Jack and Phoebe – thank you for putting up with me and giving me the motivation to keep going when the campaign got on top of me. It’s great to come home to you every day.”
