Government warned to delete ‘unlawful’ data it holds on Kilkenny people

THE Government has been ordered to delete the ‘unlawful’ data it holds on people in Kilkenny.

The Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) warned the Government it has just three-weeks to delete the data it currently holds on come 3.2 million citizens, which was obtained during the rollout of Public Service Cards (PSC).

The DPC conducted an investigation into the PSC rollout and found there is no lawful basis for the card to be used for anything other than social welfare payments and benefits. It called on the Government to delete all the other information gathered such as bills and bank statements.

The DPC investigation found it is ok for the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to process the data, but the information should not have been shared with other Government departments.
