Kilkenny’s Seanie Maguire fires Preston back into playoff spots

A well taken goal by Castlecomer’s Seanie Maguire helped fire Preston North End back in the English Championship’s playoff spots in a 2-1 victory over Fulham last night.

In a fiery encounter which saw both teams finish with ten men, the Ireland striker pounced on a breaking ball in the box on 23 minutes to put the Lillywhites one up.

Minutes later Fulham midfielder Odoi left the referee with no option but to show red after a ridiculous challenge where he led with the elbow into the face of Preston’s Patrick Bauer.

Just before halftime Preston themselves were reduced to ten men following a horrible tackle by Joe Rafferty.

Preston extended their lead with a goal from prodigal son David Nugent on 53 minutes, his first goal for the club in over 11 years. But Fulham got one back with ten minutes to go through Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, leaving the home fan at Deepdale screaming for the final whistle.

It finished 2-1, Preston’s first win in five games and sees them move back to sixth in the table, 12 points behind leaders Leeds Utd, but just one point behind Fulham in third.

Next up for Preston is a home game against struggling Luton Town this Saturday.
