LATEST: 46 new cases confirmed, HSE urges young people to ‘have sex online’ to limit spread of virus

There has been no further coronavirus related deaths but 46 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

It means the death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,763. There are now 26,208 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

No new infections were recorded in Kilkenny, where the number of cases remains at 357 cases or around one per cent of the overall total.

The new cases were confirmed as young people were urged not to have sex if they don’t live with each other to help combat the spread of the virus.

The new information campaign – called ‘Play It Safe!’ – from the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Irish Pharmacy Union instead asks young people to choose having sex online or over the phone.

In a letter to pharmacies this weekend, the HSE and the IPU, said: “Young adults, in particular, are affected by crisis pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections and are more likely to engage in sexual activity with more than one partner.

“It is very important that accurate and trustworthy information is freely available to inform sexual health decision-making, particularly during the pandemic.”
