Columnist: Olivia Goldrick Barefoot Yoga: Moving Together: A Journey Through the Camino
I’ve just returned from walking the Camino de Santiago, and the experience still lingers with me — not just in my legs, but in a much deeper sense. It wasn’t just about the landscapes or the distance we covered; it was the people I walked with, the shared energy, and the quiet moments of connection that have stayed with me.

We started as strangers, some of us already familiar through yoga, others meeting for the first time. But, from the very beginning, there was a rhythm we all fell into — different paces, different personalities, different stories. Yet, we moved together, each person bringing something unique, and it made the journey all the more meaningful. Some days, we walked quietly, each of us lost in our thoughts, although mostly our days were filled with conversation and laughter. Regardless of how the day unfolded, we were never walking alone. There was a sense of shared purpose, a knowing that we were all in it together.
The walk itself was a truly mindful experience. Without the distraction of phones or the pull of the outside world, we were left with nothing but the road ahead of us. It was just us, the landscape, and the moment. There was nowhere else to be, nothing else to do. We were living fully in the present, taking in each step, each breath, and the joy of each other’s company.
Of course, there were moments when the walk felt tougher — the hills a little steeper, the pace a little slower. There were times when we all felt the effort more, but it was in those moments that we quietly showed up for each other. Whether it was offering a kind word or simply walking side by side, we lifted each other’s spirits. It wasn’t about pushing through alone — it was about leaning on one another, sharing the journey, and finding strength in that.

The final day, as we reached Santiago, was emotional in the best possible way. We had made it — relief, pride, disbelief, and even a little sadness that it was all coming to an end. But above all, there was a profound sense of togetherness. Hugs, laughter, inside jokes that we’ll carry with us forever. We had done something significant, and we had done it side by side. That sense of connection, the understanding that we had all walked this path together, was the most powerful part of the experience.
Community isn’t just about shared experiences; it’s about knowing that, at some point, we’ll need each other — and that’s okay. Sometimes we can’t do it all alone. We can’t always push through the tough moments by ourselves. And that’s where the beauty of connection lies. It’s not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s in the quiet moments of shared effort, the subtle exchange of energy that keeps us going. It’s the unspoken support that stays with us long after the journey ends, and it’s a feeling that I carry with me every time I step onto my yoga mat.
In the studio, I see this every day. There’s a quiet strength in the collective energy of a class, in the way we encourage each other, often without saying a word. It’s the shared breath at the start of class, the silent support felt across the room, the way we fall into a rhythm together, like a moving meditation — a dance where breath and movement connect us all. We all bring our unique energy to the space, but when we come together, it becomes something bigger — something stronger. I see it not only in the classes, but also in our trainee teachers — supporting and encouraging each other to become the best they can be and to fulfill their dreams.

The Camino reminded me of something simple and true: we’re not meant to do it all alone. Whether it’s a long walk through Spain or a gentle flow on your mat, the energy we share lifts us up.
As I reflect on the journey, I realise it wasn’t just about reaching Santiago — it was about who I walked beside, and the quiet moments of connection along the way. The laughter, the shared effort, the support. That’s what made the experience truly unforgettable.
In the same way, in our yoga practice, we each bring something unique — and together, we move with purpose, presence, and strength.
